79 mustang carb help
Hi this is my first post on this forum. My 79 mustang needs a carb what are my options to be within smog regulations in california. I believe that you can only put on optioned equipment and I do not believe 79 mustangs were offered with 4 barrels though that is what I'd like to put on but I have to get this car smogged. Please help with what carbs I can put on with best possible performance in mind also don't have much cash. Thank you!

Check with Quick Fuel Technology about your situation. They might have a solution. I know sportsman circle track racing only allows 2 bbl carbs So they might be able to put you something together. I pit crewed for a Sportsman asphalt car in ARCA racing and our carb flowed about 750 CFM. I was incredible what they can do with limitations.

Being that car is almost 35 years old , I doubt the smog standards for that car are near as strict , and I doubt the testing facility would even know what standard equipment was on it to begin with. 4bbr carb with a stock looking air cleaner would probly fool most of them. Do they even do a visual check of equipment on that year car? I would think as long as your original smog equipment is there , and operational it will pass.
Don't take my word as gospel though lol, contact the dmv in your county and ask.

Of course there is that other way lol... 2bbl carb for testing , 4bbl carb for after testing.
since intakes are pretty easy to swap out , now you have no worries when you have to test once a year you put the 2bbl stuff on , test , pass , replace the 4bbl stuff.

That's what I've been thinking. Maybe I should just get a different year mustang I don't know. So I think the solution would be a carb swap for testing yeah. So my next question was what is the correct carb for the car. Is it the 2700 variable Venturi motorcraft one for the 5.0 equipped 79 cars?

Is your car manual or automatic..
There are options for both ... And some are with out California emissions.
