99 and 01 has 320 because of the tumble port heads which flow a tad better than the 96-98 and the intake has variable valve geomety which opens valves above 3500 rpm

I hate to say this but this is kind of a dumb question. As the newer models come out the engineering behind them is upgraded and they get more HP out of the engines.

Well I'm sorry I wasn't born a know it all like you. I was thinking they since they had the same engine, that the 96-98's could be upgraded with whatever the later models had?

i have to say that neither smart reponse was needed BUT i will reinforce Lizard because i would +1 that it is common sense, with years come more technology to make better engines. Just because we have 4.6s doesnt mean that its the same as a 4.6 terminator. In addition they are not the same motors, our cobras are aluminum block while yours is a steel or iron (cant recall) block. The better flowing heads and intake is what brings the higher horsepower number at the crank and at the wheels. 320hp is the rated for 99/01 with a lighter engineand 305 for 96-98 with a heavier engine
