sometimes it either grinds alittle or goes in but its only 5th gear. anybody know why?

Its your synchros. Happens with age. If it gets real bad you might wanna consider having it worked on, but otherwise you should be ok.

so what is it that is grinding and how hard is it to fix those?

the grinding is the synchros not slowing down enough for you to get the shifter in gear.

As far as fixing them I'm not sure, transmissions aren't my specialty. Sorry. =/

I have a 99 cobra with similar prob. It does not grind into 5th but the tranny will clank if shifted into 5th at low rpm's too quickly. I believe it is your syncros as well. Best you can do without a tranny rebould is a complete flush and then some good fluids and additive. Youve gotta be careful with the additives though do a little research. My transmission fluids had never been flushed till i bought the car with 40k miles. It was long overdue and glazed the syncro plates over. Some additives can actually help to break down that glaze and soften your plates to increase friction. But like I said be careful with your additives cause some of them can break down seals gaskets etc or spin a bearng. Plan on a tranny rebuild in the long run though cause they will only get worse.

probally synchros, rebuild coming your way. Other gears will start to go soon, mine does the same. waiting for it to give so i can beef everything in the tranny up
