Questions on rebuilding 96 Cobra motor
Well I think the head gaskets are blown on my Cobra. Its usin water and i can smell it out the exhaust. Doesnt leak it on the ground or in the engine oil so im assuming its getting into my cylinders. Sometimes when i first start it up and isnt hittin on all cylinders till it runs for about 30 sec to a minute then it runs fine. Hasnt lost any power or anything just have to add some water once every two weeks. So I guess its the headgastets? Anyways if it is the headgaskets it looks like i got to pull the motor. Since I got to do that might as well do other engine mods/fixes to it. Its got almost 119,000 on the motor. Doesnt use any oil and still runs awesome. Just wondering if there is somethin on these motors that should be replaced since its got a lot of miles on it. I was gonna replace seals and other things that go out over time. I was thinkin of gettin some aftermarket cams too. Any ideas on what kind of cams. Still want it streetable but more power. Best bang for your buck basically. What else should I do to it since Im doin this stuff? Any help would be great. New to the 4.6 motors. Thanks yall!

RE: Questions on rebuilding 96 Cobra motor
You can do a simple block test. Autozone lends you the tool for free. You do have to buy a bottle of the solution that goes the tool. It test for exhaust gases in the coolant. It's the easiest way I know of for testing. It takes at most 5min. and you don't get dirty doing it. Just follow the instructions on the tool.

Thats crazy I didnt think it was possible to pull off the heads while its in the car on the 4v congrats. If your block test comes up ok check the heater core hose from the passenger head mine wasmessed upand I thought I had a headgasket leak.

You need to understand that you need to have the block and heads resurfaced for the stock multy layer gasket to seal. There are other options to using the stock head gasket that does not require resurfacing.
