Default Terminator IRS Halfshaft question?

Well I'll be doing the bushing swap on the IRS soon because some of the bushings look a bit worn, and I have all the poly bushings already sitting under the bed. I'm wondering though, should I wait till I can afford a dss level 2 halfshaft (advertised good till 600 rwtq/rwhp) or will the stock 03/04 cobra halfshaft/cv be good for what my goals are (400-500 rwhp/rwtq). Main reason I ask is because I don't want to overbuild the car for what I am going to use it for(some hpde/soloII's, mostly DD) and since the IRS will be out it'd be easier and less time consuming to get the halfshaft swapped out at the same time.

ive seen people break even level 5's with 450hp. Id say leave them and if they break then fix it. These things are expensive and dont seem to be perfect.

It all depends on how the car is launched. Some break with the power levels of a pullied Cobra, others can withstand power levels of a KB. It boils down to how the car is driven. Properly driven, the stock Half-shafts can handle quite a bit.

Solo II/HPDEs usually won't break a half-shaft, stock half-shafts are fine for daily use and the twisties. Most people that break a half-shaft do it on the 1/4 mile trying to launch the car like John Force and let the thing hop. No hop = no breakage.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was thinking. Thanks again for saving me the cash^^ Now comes the tough part of debating if I wanna buy the gears/diff and get them installed after I pull the IRS.

If you are already dropping the IRS then you might as well pull the pumpkin and have the gears done and diff rebuilt while you have it out. It will be 10x easier then going in there and doing it later.

Sounds like a plan, I'll be buying: trutrac and frpp 3.73's in the next couple of weeks or so, just have to get time off to do everything. Also I'm not too certain as to what else I'd need to buy so that I can just get the shop to do labor. Is there a gear install kit for the IRS? and should I buy my own gear oil (75-90w royal purp or amsoil) and friction modifier? Oh and am I missing anything?

It is a different install kit for the IRS. The FRPP part# is M-4210-B. The carrier bearings and seals are slightly different from the SRA.
