This is true, but radials were well on their way to becoming the norm over bias ply tires when the first compact "donut" spares were being phased in and that process didn't happen overnight so there were quite a few cars produced with full size radial spares installed. During that change over period, I remember a few cars that came with compact spares but the buyer could still option the full size version. Talk about deja-vu!

Of course, those early radial tires, while they were a step up from bias ply in many applications (but not all!!), were pretty much junk too compared to the tires we have the privilege to be driving on these days.

Buy a spare of the proper size at a junkyard, or make sure you have a good setup to inflate a flat tire long enough to get to a tire store. I didn't pay for a spare either!

So you guys with Brembos, have you found anything that will fit and still have a spare tire? Just spoke with my dealer, and dont have that kind of money to throw at a spare that wont fit in the well. I did go ahead and order a new kit, since the pump is gone in mine.

Ordered one with the car for more $$, so have both pump and spare. The key with the spare is the brake caliber size, its OK with the 20's, but won't fit the performance pack Brembo's. Peace of mind I guess...

Now that's cool. Thanks for the link although it's a downright shame that Ford doesn't offer this themselves. I think it's also a crime that the spare tire is an added cost option. At the very least, it should be a no cost option. If the darned car is going to cost me upwards to $40+k, I should at least have the option to put a spare tire in the trunk at no extra cost!!

I know they're trying to save weight and I'm sure the GT is getting at least 0.0005% better fuel economy without a spare time in the trunk, but really Ford!

Just make sure the tire diameter matches your rear tires for sure. No point in having a spare that fits the well, but is way too short and ruins the differential. It needs to be around 27" in diameter in most cases.

I've got one on order. The description says it matches the rolling diameter of the stock tires, so there will no be an issue with the differential. I'll feel better with a spare in the trunk around town and on road trips. worth the money for the piece of mind.

they said its a 175/60/19 which is within about 1% of the factory tires. you could get a similar difference between the tires currently on your car if they are different air pressures or worn slightly different.
