Light years? come on, they took the heaviest, slowest GT(manual, premium, performance pack)and timed it against the fastest Camaro (1SS auto). Motor Trend is in the tank for GM. Try a base,GT,auto,3.55 gears against a manual 2SS Camaro and the outcome would have been much different.
I traded a '12 SS Camaro for my GT. Why? the SS was slow.

Is the performance pack GT really slower than an auto GT without the performance pack (not available on autos)?

I wouldn't think the performance pack would have much to do with straight line speeds. I would assume it would give you much faster times on a track or road racing, or why bother with a PP. As far as drag racing, I'd think it would take a lot of practice shifting to keep up with an "auto" equally engined. My new GT is just barely keeping the power on the pavement with an auto, so I'd bet I'd be much slower in the 1/4 mile with a manual.

Both these cars are incredibly fast.

The Mustang being much cheaper is the way to go.

I think sometime soon the government/insurance companies are gonna step in and slow these cars back down like they have in the past.

Enjoy them while you can.

I'm keeping an eye open in case the muscle car era 2.0 ends I want to jump in and get a 5.0 before they go away. I don't want to be like the people in the mid 70s who waited and ended up with one of those cars.

Fe Fi Fo Fum..I smell the blood of a troll.

And for the record, Camaro and Mustang have been locked in a performance war for decades. The Mustang won the last round since GM had to discontinue the Camaro due to poor sales. It took GM an 8 year hiatus, a complete redesign, and borrowing tech from their halo cars (Vette and CTS platforms ) to finally compete with the stang.

The camaro has gotten so close to the performance of the base vette, there's been some fear that it will start detracting from the sales of the flagship car.

So, I would expect GM to have to try and maintain an edge because frankly, they need it to survive or they risk becoming obsolete...again. One thing about owning any type of car with power...there is always something better/faster.

As for the price difference, add a supercharger on the stang and all the camaro will ever see are the stangs taillights.
