new edge vs mazdaspeed 3
A buddy of mine has a speed 3 and has been wanting to race for some time now. he got the car not too long ago, maybe 6 months max and it's his first manual car. The car is stock and it being a FWD car i'm expecting some launching problems for him. Granted I get a solid launch and my mods below who do you guys take??

I had one for about a month, maybe a month and a half. I loved it and hated it. They are fast, but they are tough to handle. The gear ratios are entirely too close, requiring extra fast shifting, which increases the chance of missing a gear, or reving past the powerband, which abruptly drops off at 6k RPM. They still pull strong, and if driven without any screw-ups, it will pull on a New Edge GT. They torque steer something awful too. A nasty little 4 banger none the less. You should out launch him, but don't be shocked if he walks you down. Not saying he will of course.

From a roll he's got you. From a dig he's got you if both of you are pretty much even drivers. You only have two minor bolt-ons that are maybe giving you 5 rwhp at the most? And that would be with a tune! Sorry but New Edge FTL.

Tune/full exhaust/gears/pulleys. I'd prob go pulleys or gears first. Or get a tuner off the classifieds and get a tune from brendspeed. Honestly I think you need at least two more mods two be even or have an edge.

How do you figure if stock the 1/4 mile times are very similar? From a roll, I 100% agree, he would have me. But in the 1/4 mile...

Some of the best drivers I've seen barely pull under a 14 in a stock New Edge GT. Full bolt on GT's with moderate suspension work are pretty much at best good for a 13.5 or 13.6. A good driver in a speed 3 can hit a 13.7 stock. You even said that yourself. Just a matter of numbers man.
