Default CAMSHAFT POSITION SYNCHRONIZER

Hi

A couple days ago on my 2000 v6 i noticed a squeal on start up then after about 30 sec the squeal went away. Then yesterday the squeal got louder and the check engine soon light came on. Now the squeal is there all the time, but is worse on a cold start. My first thought is that it was the water pump, so i took off the serpentine belt and started the car with no accessories but the noise was still there.

I then did a search and this guys post is the most similar to what i have

https://mustangforums.com/m_844947/tm.htm

his problem turned out to be the CAMSHAFT POSITION SYNCHRONIZER, but what is that and where is it located, and any ideas what is causing this.

Thanks so much for your help

ok i found out where it is and that it is the problem. I have another question, i have to wait for the part, so is it ok to drive the car around with the camshaft synchronizer broken or will i do more damage to something else in the engine?

You can drive around with it & it wont hurt the rest of the engine. I drove mine 3L for 4 months like that. The camshaft synchroniser sends a signal to the PCM telling when TDC #1 cyl on firing stroke. However the engine also has a crank position sensor so the engine can still run on a different strategy. The new one has to be timed correctly though or the CEL wont go out. You can get a timing jig from e-bay fairly cheap.

HTH, Steve.

You need to find out if the synchroniser is damaged or it might just be the cam sensor (CMP). The sensor is fairly cheap & easy to install. The synchroniser is much more expensive & has to be installed in the right position or fuel injection timing wont be correct.
