Exclamation Could overheating cause a service engine light?

My question is in the title...
Basically, today is about 100* out, and like any normal person I said F it and put the A/C on full blast. I dont normally use my A/C because Im too cheap and dont wanna waste gas but it was way too hot today.

Next thing I know, my engine temp gauge is through the roof and my service engine soon light pops on. I quickly turn off the car, let it cool down with the AC off and all is good, but my engine light wont go away.

Could the quick overheating cause the light to come on?

Yes, but it may be due to something that got jacked up when you overheated it.

I've never seen a CEL for overheating, but ...

1.) you should try and figure out why it overheated.
2.) you should pray to whoever you pray to you didn't do any real damage.

Well I took the car to the gas station and everything was fine, then I came out and turned it on and the light was on etc etc...So I let it cool down and quick got it home (live like 3 minutes away) and its been sitting since.

Im borrowing a scanner tool off a friend of mine tomorrow so if the light is still on I can hopefully pull some codes. I doubt it was on long enough to really mess something up (I hope.)...

Also, my car never overheats like that...Only when the A/C is running for a good amount of time.

How long did it over heat for? How far did the temp gauge go, and how long did it take before you turned the car off.

I noticed it immediately after I got out of the gas station (it wasnt on before I went in). The gauge was almost touching the red line and I saw the light so I turned it off right away, let it sit for 5 min and turned it back on to go home.

I drove with the air turned off though and the gauge slowly dropped and by the time I got home it was at normal temp, but the CEL is still on.
