Default Wanting to install interior lights

Hey,
Got a quick question and I haven't been able to find the answer yet. I was wanting to install some simple led light strips in my 2001 mustang with a switch attached. I could easily hook it up to a cigarette lighter, an install a switch through that, but I was wanting to make it a bit cleaner and look closer to factory. There is an extra slot by the shifter, one that is normally for foglights. Its located next the the trac contorol and rear defrost. The toggle is of course just a plastic plug, but there is wiring behind it. So after all this going on the question is it possible to buy a fog light toggle and some how hook up these lights to this extra wiring and will it mess up anything? Or is this dead extra wiring?

It's a simple wiring process...you will have a positive, negative, and possibly ground feeds coming into the toggle, you basically need the same leaving the toggle. It will work but you will need a diagram to make sure you don't cut the wrong wires.

would be better off finding interior powersource such as int lights or cig lighter harness and tape that then install a switch and so forth.
that depends also on the load your going to be putting on the circuit...guessing led wouldnt take much.

A diagram for those wires is exactly what I was needing. I understand the cigerette lighter or other power source would be simpler, but again, if i could use this wiring as a source and buy one of the factory buttons that goes there i think it would look a lot nicer. If i could just find the positive and negative to those wires, assuming there is one, the job will be a peice of cake for sure.

When do you want the lights to be on. If you use the power feed for the foglamp switch i believe the lights will go out when you are on high beam.

That said there is nothing to stop you from using a foglamp switch. get a switch from a wrecking yard with the connector and a few inches of wire.

if you get the connector and wiring with the switch:

Connect 12v to pin 4 should be red w/black (Suggest ignition switched)

connect pin 5 as output to the lights yellow wire

connect pin 3 light blue w/red to dash lighting if desired for illuminating the switch

connect pin 2 to ground black wire.

connect the add on lights ground to chassis.

Thanks you Belairbrian, that is eaxtly what I was needing to know. I had a tester to find which one was the ground and power sources but after finding 2 power sources wasn't sure which would work properly.
