Default 2003 Ford Mustang squeaked, check engine light came on, power gone, and stuck in road

Hello everyone. Wow did I have a bad morning. Started my car this morning (it's relatively cold outside, if that matters), and heard this obnoxious squeaking sound, but it stopped after a few minutes of idling, so I figured I was a-ok. I drove about a mile from my house (in a construction zone) and while waiting at the stop light, my car squeaked again (loudly), the check engine light came on, and then she died. I tried to restart, but no luck. I ended up pushing my car off the road so I wasn't blocking traffic.

Called my fiance and he was able to get it started again, let it run for a few minutes, and we were able to get it back home, but it also came close to dying on him again. He said he accelerated very quickly when he felt it about to die and that prevented the engine from stopping.

My check engine light has never come on, so I'm not sure what's going on. My battery light has been on for over 2 years (intermittently), but I've had the battery checked over and over and nothing is wrong with it. It was perfectly fine yesterday. Any help on what could be the problem is much appreciated.

Let me add...we're both thinking this is an alternator issue, but before we go spend a couple hundred bucks on one, we wanted to get a second opinion.

Warning lights shouldn't be ignored. They are illuminated for a reason. The first step is to find out what code the computer threw to make the check engine light come on. That info will point you in the right direction. Never guess. You'll waste more time & money that way. Once you have the codes, post them up and we'll see if we can help.

Be sure and check the belt. Mighta broke or slipped loose. Then again might be the timing chain/belt. When my Contour's belt went it just died..no sound.
