Speedo help, what and how to replace/fix?
Okay so I have a 97 Mustang 3.8L v6 auto, the guy i got it from said they had to replace something in the dash to fix the speedo. and well I have put 15,000 miles on it and the speedo has been messing up last few thousand miles, it never reads the right speed. it will show im going 70 when I'm doing 35, I know cause I use a GPS on a cell phone to see my real speed.
I found a gear set on ebay for like $18.00 but are they really gears inside the gauges? I have had my dash apart before and its all electronic right?
Is there maybe a how to video somewhere I could watch? I try to search the site but found nothing for my yr model
thanks

I had the same issue with my 98 V-6. You probably have two issues. One there is a gear for the odometer that breaks (that is the gear you mentioned on e-bay). It is a matter of taking the cluster out and changing the gears behind the actuator motor. There is a video on you tube that shows you how.
I had to replace the cluster on mine to get rid of it fluctuating.
In your case does the odometer work OK but the speedo fluctuates? If so then your trans speed sensor is OK. In my car the odometer worked OK but the gauge fluctuated.
Of course if you change your gear ratio in the rear end or your tire size the speedo will be off. If your cluster has a drive shaft then you have a different problem. I'm not sure what the 97 has, I can only guess electronic.
