How many miles on the clutch? Do you race the car? Just guessing, maybe throw out bearing. Mine used to do that in 3rd gearbefore I changed out the cheap clutch that someone put in before I owned the car. As soon as I would shift into 4th (5speed) it would go away. Tough to say with your description. How many miles on the car? Is it the stock clutch from the factory? Enjoy!

If the noise goes away when you push the clutch in (even a little) then it's a clutch bearing.

Ok so... I KNOW this is an extremely OLD thread but I have been reading through all the old threads for information on items for the past few months now and this one struck a cord with me so please bare with me...

I am experiencing a "whining" sound(s) of sorts but for the life of me I cant tell if its coming from the front (under hood) or rear (gears) on my car.

I just had my clutch replaced in December. Work done was...

- New Clutch and Pressure Plate
- Flywheel Resurface
- New TOB (Throw Out Bearing)
- New Pilot Bearing
- New Pivot Ball / Stud (I think that's what its called)
- Repairs to the Clutch Fork

Now, what my car does is... As I accelerate (in ANY gear) the car will make kind of a whine sound as the gears spool up towards needing to be shifted so the whine is in sync with the RPM. Should also be noted that the car WAS making these same sounds BEFORE the clutch was replaced as well.

This noise can be heard in ANY gear from 1 - 4 (not sure if I've ever heard it in 5th gear or not) as you are accelerating. The noise starts off "low pitch and as the RPM's climb the pitch of the whine gets higher. The REVERSE is true upon "down shifting". As I down shift the pitch of the whine is high and as the car slows down the pitch gets lower and lower.

Now the REALLY weird part is that in 3rd gear I seem to be getting 2 distinct whining noises. One is really pitchy like the noise I described above and at the same time there is a much more "hollow" sounding whine that is almost more like a howl of sorts. Again, this seems to ONLY be in 3rd gear.

I hope this makes sense to someone and that someone can lead me in the right direction. When I was at the tranny shop he showed me the rear end while the drive shaft was off and said there was some "play" in the diff and he was able to move / turn the round plate that the drive shaft connects to from side to side (right to left) slightly with his hand about a half inch each way. Can this be part of the issue here?

Again, I cant tell if these noises are coming from the front or the rear of the car but if someone can lead me in the right direction I would APPRECIATE it!!!

Thanks...

Lolz yes if the pinion flange can be moved left/right side to side , that is your problem. Either the outer pinion bearing is junk or the bearing preload was not adjusted correctly, or the pinion nut is loose.

Youll need at minimum and new crush collar , and likely outer pinion bearing. but don't expect the noise to go away, usually if something happens with the gears they will always whine, because the wear pattern is set. Certainly if you continue driving it like that you will destroy the gears.

Not saying that the pinion issues don't need to be addressed but in his other thread he says it's dependent on rpm, if the noise was from the rear it would be dependent on what speed he is doing regardless of rpm or gear, I would guess that he has another issue causing the noise as well as needing to fix his rear. If the rear is that worn something else is sure to be going out on the other end of the drivetrain.
