Default whining when I turn the steering wheel...

so my 2000 mustang makes a whining noise as well when I turn the steering wheel, it is at its worst when when I am turning the steering wheel but I can still hear it if I get close the engine were the steering pump is located. A mechanic I know wasn't worried about it and said it was because there was a little bit of air in the power steering fluid, getting rid of some of the air helped but it did not get rid of it though. any ideas?

I'm new to owning a Mustang, but it seems like most Fords I've been around over the years always had whiny ps pumps. Didn't stop me from buying a Ford, though. I'd guess that you probably don't have a major issue - but tough to say without hearing it.

Good luck - hope it's nothing serious!

Low ps fluid or a bad pump. Mine does not whine and any car I had that did it was always low on fluid.

+1 As far as low ps fluid or bad pump. Also you could have the wrong fluid....the 99-2004 (As well as other cars im sure) Takes ATF fluid for power steering fluid instead of power steering fluid... You could always flush the system and refill it with ATF to see if you get any better.... I can't remember exactly what ATF it takes but it is mercon v if im not mistaken. Best wishes and good luck on getting rid of the whining

FWIW - my '07 whines very slightly when turning the wheel at idle sitting still; you can't hear it unless the windows are down and you're listening for it. Our '03 Navigator does as well - it always has. I've never been concerned about either.

...maybe I should be?

Could be several things.... low on fluid (which means you need to find a leak before it gets way worse and leaves you stranded), pump going out (which can leave you stranded) or a worn out rack and pinion putting stress on the pump (which can leave you stranded).

See where I'm heading with this?

Wait..a dead pump or fluid could leave you stranded? Ive driven power steering cars that the PS was out on ..it was hell compared to one that never had it but I could still do it.
