Default 2002 3.8L V6 Auto Transmission

I was driving down the highway the other day car was shifting fine, i was doing about 60 MPH then my car jerked and my RPM's spiked up. i got off the high way got to a stop light and it shifted into second just fine but nothing after that. I don't know much of anything about auto trans so i have no clue what is going on. I haven't had any problems with the car shifting rough or anything.

Cheaper/easier would be to swap in a new automatic or have it rebuilt. Will it not shift whatsoever now? It sounds odd that it would just fail like that with no slipping or warning. How many miles? Ever had it serviced?
