Default Am i getting ripped off?

so i phoned a few shops today and they quoted it would cost around 1300 labor to install a bearing rebuild kit for my mustang the diff has been whining so its either my bearings or ring and pinion or its 720 labor to install a used rear diff im pretty sure i can install one myself so would it be best for me to buy a used 8.8 from a gt and do it myself ?

I'm thinking should be half that, including new ring & pinion.

Unless all those shops around you are booked, extremely busy doing rears and can get away with charging that much, I'd look elsewhere. I mean 1300 around here can get you a rebuilt trans lol.

If this is for a 7.5 then yes you are getting ripped. You can pick up another entire 7.5 assembly for around $100 USD and install it yourself or grab a 8.8 for less than $300 USD and install it.

A quote for just labor to install parts I provided was around $1000 USD. this was to install a one-piece drive shaft, rebuild the diff, and install 3.73 gears. $1300 USD sounds a bit high for that. The place I was quoted by was a drive-shaft and differential specialty place here in the valley.

You could probably buy a used car in bad shape but drivable for that price. ....or a nice used motorcycle.

Default diff overhaul

Hey Rory, I just checked our Motor Labour Manual and it states 5 hrs for new ring and pinion and carrier bearings. If you add axle bearings and seals it shouldn't be more than 5.5.
Our shop rate is $125 x 5.5= $687, that doesn't include fluid or anything. But even if you were to use synthetic, it would be a far cry from $1300. it is a shame we are so far away. What kind of shop rates are they charging there?

Where are you located? location can be a big factor on labor charges and whatnot. but I agree with everyone here. looks like whoever have you that quote is trying to shaft you.
