Alright, so I just made a drive from Iowa down to Texas. Before the drive, and during it, she had no problem. Rode great. Then I get in it this morning and while driving it made this really high pitched whining sound and the service engine light came on. I'm at a total loss. While idling, it's very faint and not as often. It's not my A/C unit, or the alternator. I'm thinking its the Power Steering, but I don't have a leak, and it's not difficult to turn, but that's where the whining sounds like it's coming from. Just would like a more experienced point of view on it before I go buy parts that aren't needed.

Go to Auto zone and ask them to scan the computer for the code that was set when the cel came on.

Simply check the fluid in the power steering if thats what you think. They have a little dipstick built into them...well most do....if not you can usually see the fluid.

The power steering pumps are notorious for whining on these cars, even full of fluid. Does the pitch increse with rpm?
