Default 01 mustang not shifting into OD

My 2001 Mustang 6cyl automatic will not shift into OD. Fluid level is good, OD button is on and showing on. It shifts into all other gears fine. It just won't shift into OD. Please someone with some help.

Welcome!

What do you mean by "OD button is on and showing on"? If you press the button to manually cancel OD, the "O/D OFF" light will illuminate and you will only have 3 forward gears. If this light is always on, overdrive will not engage. Can you get the light to go out?

Why does a mustang have an o/d off button?

Because OD is not needed in town and is a detriment in fact. Its only needed on long highway drives.

Sorry I just meant that the OD button is working correctly. Such as push button it says on, push again it says off. But does not actually engage.

Bummer. I was hoping for a super easy fix.

The problem could still be electrical in nature, perhaps down at the MLPS or an open circuit somewhere. It could also be hydraulic, like an issue with the OD servo piston. Or maybe the OD band is actually fried, and it's time for a rebuild. Lot of possibilities...

The next thing I would do is inspect the wiring harness going to the transmission, and look for any damaged or corroded wires. Then check the MLPS and make sure that it's adjusted properly.
