ECC Code 31 on an 88 LX 2.3
Hey guys I was wondering if you could help me out on this Im pulling a code 31 off the comp for my 88 stang its runing an FC1 ECC-IV module my book says this is something to do with the EGR circut, but ive check the EGR and vacuum modulators and they all check out but im still getting this code, is it the wiring? anyone else have this problem? also my milage is kinda crappy getting about 15 to 18, used to get over 20. The engine seems to be runing ok and a plug reading does not seem to show an abnormally rich AF mixture, also I tested the FPR and fuel system and its pulling 30# which is just in spec according to my manual.
this is a frustrating problem!
any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Could be a clogged EGR passage. Carbon tends to build up under the EGR valve. Take the valve off, and check to make sure there is no buildup under it. If there is, be prepared. That stuff gets hard as a rock. Carefully chip it out and get it outa there.

I thought of that too, I removed the valve and carb cleanered the stuff out. I also applied vacuum to the valve and it opened just fine, so again this is a bit of a mystery, I even replaced the EGR position sensor. I dont know why ford couldnt simply stick to the simple reflex design they used on the 88 TC, and had to go to this complicated valving desing.
