94-95 had headgasket problems, but thats the only real engine problem I know of.

as for performance, they dont respond well to small bolt ons(similar to 2v's). but, there are a lot of decently priced FI options. for singpleports, the M90 swap is an option, since it will cost under 2k total if you play it right, and run an otherwise stock car into deep 14's

Well here are a few specs to get you started:

94-95 5.0L Cobra - 240bhp 285 torque
94-95 5.0 SVO GT-40 - 290bhp, 320 torque (rare)
94-95 5.0 SVO GT-40 S/C - 380bhp 390 torque (very rare)
96-98 4.6L Cobra - 300bhp 320 torque
94-95 5.0L GT - 215bhp 285 torque
96-98 4.6L GT - 215bhp 290 torque (still slower than the 5.0, go figure that)
94-95 3.8L V6 - 145bhp 215 torque
96-98 3.8L V6 - 150bhp 215 torque

Now with all that out the way the 94/95 V6s had the older AODE transmission, which sucked a little more juice out of the engine that the newer 4E70R (I think I did that right) auto that was a hair pin better. They also suffered sever head gasket problems which were fixed midway through 96. 94-95 was an older (non tunable EEC IV Ecu) that ran off of OBD1 system, 96 used the newer tunable EEC V ecu runing OBDII systems. They also made other changes to the 96-98 V6, but I'll be damned if I remember them all.

There's a decent market of parts for the V6, but IMO, 94-98s are not a very good building block to work with unless you're really dead set on making that car perform, you have a modest size wallet, and can do most the work yourself. All in all, for your GT, just have her stick to the basics, K&N drop in, exhaust, maybe pullies, gears/t-lok but I wouldn't go much more than that for her. If she really wants speed, but you can't find a decent GT/Cobra, then save up and slap on an S/C which will make the 3.8L in that year perform roughly the same, if not a little better, than a GT.

If she doesn't care about V8 or V6, just get a 96-98 V6 and save yourself a lot of money.

The v6 engine is pretty much bulletproof if maintained at all. If she doesn't care about performance at all would go ahead and get her the 6 and save a couple of grand.

+1 look for a late 96 up mustang, 94-96.5s had the Headgasket problem as stated and thats really it, however now you can start finding the 99-00s for a lot less as well and they have 40 extra HP, 20 ft.lbs of torque and better gearing.

unless you can find a GT that you cant refuse id just do the V-6, or teach her to drive a manual, give her your car, and buy yourself a cobra

Second one looks like poo poo. My only worries with the 5.0 would be the millage, and the fact that it will be a little higher maintenance car, really depends on how much stuff the previous owner's had to replace.
