My car has an extremely irritating whine coming from the engine and i can't figure out what it is. It gets louder and the pitch goes up when i accelerate. Also, when i am idling the RPMs kinda go up and down.
I noticed the alternator kinda has a whine when i open the hood, so i took it to autozone so they could check it. The test said the alternator was good, but it had a bad diode..
I'm confused as to how the alternator is "good" but has a bad diode. do you think this is what is causing the whine? Is there anything else i should check?

Could check the Power Steering fluid and make sure you have enough fluid in it.

Whines and squeals are usually associated with a pulley somewhere.. The power steering is a good start, make sure it's topped off.. Check idler pulleys for squeals after that.. It would help if you had a sound clip or video, there's so many different kind of "whines"..

Its almost always the power steering pump, they almost always whine no matter the fluid level.
