What does the traction control do?

What does the traction control do?
Hey guys,
My pony came with traction control as part of the anti-lock brakes option. What does this feature do? In my experience, it seems to kick in anytime the rear wheels slip, but it's hard to tell exactly what is going on back there.
Do any of you have this option? What's the difference between the traction control and a limited slip differential (auburn or t-lok)? Would I benefit from installing an LSD (besides burnouts!)?
Thanks!
Tim

RE: What does the traction control do?
Traction control uses the ABS system to pulse the brakes on a wheel it detects as spinning, slowing it and hopefully allowing the non-spinning wheel on the other side to receive some power. In that sense it is somewhat similar to a limited slip. A limited slip does this job far better though and doesn't wear your brake pads while doing it.

lol, i have no idea what he thinks is different, i just never have much trouble in the snow (had a big snow storm today), even when i had my '90 firebird with no traction control or ABS and wide *** tires i had very little trouble, and he just seems to "get stuck" alot in his '00 v6 and it is jsut a dream for me in my '06, and im telling him the systems have not changed but he says they have.... i just need you guys to justify so he will shut the hell up, lol... i think he is just making excuses for inability to drive a RWD vehicle in winter , hehe

lol i think he should take his car to an empty parking lot with gobs of snow , and try and get stuck!,, youll notice when your trying.. chances are you wont.. unless your heading for a ditch
i think he jsut needs to learn some basic RWD +winter techniques
