ok as far as i understand...the 4.1's have more top end power and the 3.7's are more low end? i used to have a rice eater...we just cared about boost and the right tune to make power not gears! EXPLAIN!
I believe it's exactly the opposite. 4.10's will give you higher rpm's at speed (but a killer take-off) thus reducing your top speed.

3.73's hit the sweet spot for me.
no no no you all are wrong, and alot of people use "top end" and "top speed" interchangably

4.10s lowers your top end and will increase your top speed because the cars are limited by the drag that they create, but it will be turning higher RPMs so it will allow you to use OD and accelerate through it to overcome the drag. and as for gas milage, you will start getting city on the highway and highway in the city

4.10s or nothing

hamidlmt do you know off hand what your rpms are at 80 mph?

if you are at 3000 rpms at 80 mph, isn't that KILLING your average MPG?

i am trying to apply a little of my logic, though that is often way off the mark

by lowering top end you mean horsepower in the higher rpms? I understand that it allows you to have a higher top speed but doesn't it make you accelerate slower? i sort of like the highway in the city deal.

LMAO oh my i never seen soo much wrong information

4'10's you lose top speed compared to a smaller ratio, but you gain in torque and acceleration and your harder on gas, because you wil be at a higher rpm at your normal cruising speed

top end is the wrong term to use in this situation, it confuses people

the smaller your ratio, the less torque and the greater top speed,

3'73's has a greater top speed than the 4'10's. will also has less torque, and will be slower off hte line, also better fuel milage

your driveshaft turns the pinion, how many times the pinion turns to complete one revolution of your crown determins your ratio, the more it turns relative to the crown the greater the mechanical advantage , which is more torque(aka towing abilities).. the lesser amount of turns relative to the crown, is of a lesser mechanical advantage (its still an advantage an underdrive is still being produced)and less torque in comparison.

you cannot win both accel or top speed, its one or the other, its a balancing thing

another example is that say your cruising at 60mph at 2200rpm with the stock gearing

you throw higher ration gears like the 4:10's you will then be cruising at (around) 3500rpm (its a guestimate) harder on gas, and you will have a lesser top speed

our stock 3.33 rear end gearing will have a higher top speed compared to both 3'73's and 4'10's

ok im gonna trust you blackfoot because you seem to know the most about our cars...but while we are on the topic of top speed...does anybody know what our top speed is once the governer is eliminated by a tuner? im hoping its governed because 113 drag limited is TERRIBLE. If 4.1's bring down the top speed from 113 then racing might suffer if extensive modding is done...correct? if anyone has 3.73's or 4.1's what top speeds have you been seeing?

thank god for blackfoot!! you actually know what your talking about!

(BTW i love mustangman's sig "4.10 gears and t-lok--if you dont know anything aboot gears, dont comment on"......i think he is breaking his own rule!!)

yes, 4:10's will lower top speed, but improve torque, and off the line umpf. 3.73's are better for manual usually because we all know (manual owners) how fast this car goes through first, so wilh a higher ratio gear, you will almost have no first gear.lol lots of torque but it wont last long...lol

and before youstart saying "you dont even have gears", you are correct.... for this car. my truck has 4.56's, and i know what they do.
oh yeah and dont think your rpm'swill jump from 2200-3500! that would be crazy!(and it would suck) i think its more like 2200-3000.

just my $0.02

oh yeah: 8cd03gro, the car is governed to 113 from the factory. drag limits arelike 147 or something...i dont remember, but a tuner will remove the governer(sp?) and you can get a gps and tell us all what she'll do !! lol

mustangman DEMANDS that you get 4.10's no matter what, regardless of the application. Ive seen it in a few threads. Not everyone needs imaculate acceleration and an unpractical highway car! Some people just want a mild upgrade, after all it is better than our stock 3.31's. Did you know some people have to travel the highway everyday to get to work/school???
