Wide wheels, tires and steering rack limiters
About a month ago, I installed Ford Racing wheels, 18 x 8.5 with 255-40/18 tires on my 2005 Mustang vert V6 but much to my chagrin, they rubbed the frame when the steering wheel was turned all the way. I contacted the technical department at Ford Racing and was told that those wheels are only for the GT Mustang that has a wider track and they were not surprised that the tires rubbed on the frame. I did not want to install spacers to solve the problem.
After I placed a post as to the above, I was contacted by Josh Sadowsky at stang suspensions. He gave me the part number for a horseshoe shaped plastic washer that Ford makes, this washer installs in the steering rack, and limits the turning radius of the car by a minimal amount, but enough that the tires won't rub. I ordered the part from ford, they are only about a $1.50 each, and I ordered 4 just in case.
Today I installed the washers and Voila! problem solved. The tires no longer rub. The installation took about 5 minutes. The washers fit perfectly. The loss of turning radius is negligible. Remember that when you remove the steering rack boot, the clips that hold it in place are not reusable. I used plastic zip ties to hold the boot in place while I order the clips from Ford.
I believe that with this simple modification to the steering rack, V6 Mustangs will be able to use fairly wide wheels and tires. From my investigations, I believe this is what Steeda also does to fit wide tires on the V6 Mustang.

RE: Wide wheels, tires and steering rack limiters
I have 20 x 8.5 wheels with 245/40/20's in the front and 20 x 10 wheels with 275/35/20's in the back and I didnt have any problem with any rubbing whatsoever..... so I guess maybe 245 in the front may be the limit for width on the 6....

The tires in the back are not a problem. Some on this board may not have had problems with rubbing because of the wheel size. The wheels that I have are 18 X 8.5 bullitts manufactured by Ford Racing. They have a 50 mm offset. If you call them, they will tell you that the wheels are not for the V6 model.
If the front wheels do rub, contact Josh Sadowski at stangsuspension. He will give you the part number for the washers that you can order from Ford and then install them. This should take care of any front wheel rub problems.

there is no diffrence in the track or the offset between the GT and the V6..at all, they require the same offset wheel. They just sold you a wheel with too much offset for the width, therefore causing it to rub

I spoke to a technician at Ford Racing and they said the track on the GT and the V6 is different. I bought the wheels from Blue Oval Industries (they always have products on E-Bay) and the ad does specify that the wheel is for the GT Mustang.
