if you can find an amp that takes speaker level input it is pretty easy to wire. It saves you the cost and look of taking out the stock headunit. All you do is find the rear speaker outputs from the stereo, and connect them to the inputs on the amp. I did it on my celica before i bought this car.

all you have to do is buy a line out converter. mount it to the rear deck where the speakers are and get some scotch blocks and just tap in right their, you run the rca's right to your amp. any local stereo store should have the loc.

I installed an alpine mrp-m350 mono amp, which has speaker level inputs. I tapped into the rear speakers and hooked it up to my 12" infinity kappa perfect sub. It sounded like crap!! I have the shaker 500 which has two amps on the driver side kick pannel. I tappen into the line level input to the amps ad ran rca cables to the alpine amp. This setup sounded a little better, but still crap. I had the amp and speaker in my 04 envoy usine line level out on my pioneer deck and it sounded great. If I was you I would buy an aftermarket and be done with it. Don't waste your money on a line level adapter you will not be satisfied IMO. I havn't tried the line level adapter myself because I have speaker level input on my amp. I plan on installing an aftermarket stereo and trying to get rid of the shaker 500, it is a pain in the butt to load cd's and takes forever to change disks.

If you buy a decent line level converter it sounds decent. A good amp will also have a built in crossover and bridging option for one channel to run subs on. You don't have to worry about high level inputs. My acura sounded pretty good, and my amp was 7 or 8 years old with the afore mentioned features. Level converters are pretty cheap, i'd go that way first before you spend the $$ on a stereo, when you could buy a cai and tuner for about the same.
