Default GT sound vs. V6 sound

Hey, this may be a stupid question, but here goes. I've heard people here say that you can't get a V6 to sound like a GT with dual GT exhaust, but if the V6 displaces 4.0 litres of air per engine cycle and the GT displaces only .6 litres more air per engine cycle, is the sound really that much different? We're only talking 15% more air out exhaust, am I right?

Yes, you are right but the sound is that much different because it is more than simply a matter of displacement. The Gt has two more lungs and the Odd-fire engine characteristics (coupled with the crossover) give it the unique GT sound.

Correct, the GT engine is only 15% larger than our beloved 4.0L V6's. I believe the sound comes from the firing of the cylinders, noit necessarily the amount of air flowing or displacement. There are 8 explosions inside a GT 4.6L engine, and that creates a different sound than the six in our 4.0L's. Engine timing and firing sequence also affect the sound. I believe that's why the GM V6's sound bad (IMO) when aftermarket mufflers are added.

Although I love the rumble of the new GT S197's (stock and modified), I love the unique sound of our 4.0L's (especially with the top down!). Our little sixers have a great sound on their own.

Hope this helps.

15 % is a big difference also you have to add gears in the equation...................also in my personal opinion I think the new "2005 2006 2007" gt mustangs don't sound that good with exhaust anyways.................the older model mustang "1994-2004" had the mufflers in the middle of the car, but on the newer body style the mufflers is at the very back.........flowmasters and any other muffler sounds a lot different when there is pipe behind it ..............just my thought

You are correct..

The sound is a combination of the displacement, along with the number of fires in a cycle as well as the coordinaion of the fireing sequence..

A real good example of this is the "Sound" of a Harley.... because the harley doesn' fire the cylindars a equal points in a rotation cycle they create a unique sound. So much so they copyrighted the sound and won a law suite against Honda for infrindgment when Honda built an engine with offset fireing like the HD.

The sound is also impacted by the stye of cylindar.. that is... is it a shallow wide one.. or a narrow deep one (a stroker). Each will create a very different sound.

Thanks for answering my question. Now I will spend the rest of the summer listening to the exhaust clips to help me decide if it's worth putting in the DS GT takeoff.

While all the things mentioned play somewhat of a role, the tone of the exhaust sound is determined much more by cam/head design.
