Dude you need to change it and fast. It's only a matter of time before you loose horsepower and you engine begins to beep. After a month it will pretend it has VTEC and begin to whine and then explode. You really need to read your manual and be up on things like this. I am a car guru and my knowledge is LAW!

Actually I live in Louisiana.

So should I leave the 5w20 in the engine? I'm not a total car newbie (I have turned wrenches helping a friend do a motor swap) but close enough.
The 2003 V6 3.8L uses 5w20 syn blend as the standard recommended oil. no problems yet at
42000 miles in my daughters mustang.

although 5w30 is of a thiner oil. but i live in canada and everyother motor takes 5w20 anyways, and we see below 40 weather often in the winter
5w30 is thicker not thinner than 5w20, the first number is the viscosity at 0*F and the second number is the viscosity at 32*F the higher the number the thicker the oil. If you don't believe me compare som 5w20 to 85w140 I promise you the 85w140 will be much thicker and based on what you are saying it would be much thinner.

Someone in here stated that 5w30 was thinner than 5w20. That not how modern oil works, those two numbers designate the oil as a multi-viscosity oil. Which means, it isnt just 30 weight, or only 20 weight, it can change its weight depending on the temperature, if its hot as crap, it can be as heavy as 30 weight, and if its cold as hell, it can be as thin as 5. the lower the number, the thinner the oil is. My Fordson Tractor has straight 30weight in it and its like syrup...lol, hence gear oil is 90W and its like mollasses.the difference in 5w20 and 5w30 is that the 5w30 can take more heat, it can thicken up to a 30 weight, thicker than 5w20. My uncle has some crazy oil, its Mobil 1 0w30...lol
its actually 0w30, thats silly. Just some info on how oil works, I used to do AOAP oil analysis for the Army when I did QAQC, Army Oil Analysis Program(AOAP).

Well, its no offense, I just posted that to help people understand how it works, No hard feelings blackfoot. By the way, your car looks very similar to mine, black sucks when its dirty, but when its waxed up and gleaming, nothing, and i mean nothing out shines it, like a mirror almost...lol I bet you could put 15w40 in the V6 and it wouldnt hurt it, it may not be recommended, and it may not be best in the long haul, but even THAT wouldnt hurt it in 3000 miles. Im not interested in hurting anyones feelings in this forum, or showing anyone up, I just like talking, and helping out if i can.

lol no offence taken lmao.. this is what this site is for.. ill be honest i never really thought oil through... lol all i know is that one of hte apprentices accidentally put 5w20 in a vehicle that took 5W30 and one of hte techs told him not to worry about it that it wouldnt hurt the motor.. and then continued to explain .. but i only heard half the story.. and in school i slept through that class lol
