Mileage gains

RE: Mileage gains
I drove from maryland to canada, about 700 miles of highway, and back.
The way up I had the ac off, top down, and used cruise control most of the way (70ish), except for a couple spots where I was alone on the road and since the car had only been mine for a couple weeks, decided to see where the speed governor was. According to the onboard mpg calculator (reset before I left) I got 27.1 mpg on the way up.
On the way home, top was up the whole time, A/C on, and I don't think I messed with cruise control at all, and got 24.3 mpg according to the computer.
I didn't do my own math, because I figured over a distance like that the computers average should be pretty good.
I'd say 80-90% of my daily driving is highway, and I've never seen my average mpg below 20, I reset it after every fill up (while still parked).

My mileage on the highway drops off quick if I do one of two things
1. Drive over 80mph for a prolonged period
2. Don't use my cruise control
Lots of literature out there will tell you that using cruise control on the highway will increase your mileage and save you some $$$, so if you haven't tried that, give it a whirl and see what happens...

On a recent long distance road trip, my GT got 31.999 MPG, but that was because I was drafting behind an 18-wheeler.
During the entire trip (1400+ miles), it averaged about 27 MPG, not uncluding the 31.999 MPG, while driving no more than 75 MPH.
In 50/50 city and hwy, it gets anywhere between 22.+ to 23.+ MPG.
One thing that really annoys me are people who constantly pump the gas pedal. This type of driving contributes to really crappy MPG. I'm sure many of you have ridden with someone who does this, which I call Pumping Pedal Syndrome. Its that constant speeding up, slowing down, speeding up, and slowing down jerking feeling when they drive. Its especially annoying on the highways, thats why I have to drive 99.9% of the time because I can't stand it. When I'm riding with someone who does this, I just feel like grabbing their leg and telling them to STOP IT DAMMIT!
Every now and then, I'll come up to one of these people on a highway or interstate and so I pass them then, a few minutes later, they come passing by me and then they slow down and I end up passing them. This goes on for a while until I get tired of seeing this so I have to either speed up to get away or slow down so they can pull away.
I hate that! [:@]

RE: Mileage gains
I keep a close eye on my economy and I found a few things that really effect it. Everything is stock on the 05 v6 except it has a KN stock replacement filter which didn't do diddly. Here are some steps to better fuel econly, not best, just better, not sure what makes best yet!
1. Buy a good quality fuel, cheaper is not always better! 3 mpg loss with poor fuel is around 9% loss, so figure 9% at $3 gas and that adds up to .27 a gallon, the more expensive gas is by far not that much more expensive. And this is not premium, just good 89 octane gas. Premium might gain one gallon, maybe 2 at the most from my experience.
2. Limit A/C usage. I was amazed. I filled up one day and started down on a good highway trip, milage was avg 24.3, which I thought was bad because I usually get 27-28. My wife says turn off the a/c and I thought, it can't make that much difference, well it did! In 15 miles, my avg on the computer came up to 27 and when we got to our destination, 150 miles later it was 28.2. I like to keep the windows up, but just letting those know if you like the windows down you can gain some milage on your gas!
