Default Loud Noise In Rear

A few times when I am parking by my house, which is on a hill, I will go to put the car in reverse and when I do I get a loud clunk and the car feels like it is dropping hard in reverse. Does anyone know what this could be? And if it is serious? It only does it on hills. Thanks

I used to have a loud noice in the rear too. Then I stopped letting my wife bring her mother along with us in the car. Now the loud noise is gone... Hmnnnnn....

Chances are what you're hearing is the parking pawl releasing inside the transmission. When you're parked on a slop the pawl is under tremendous pressure (since it's holding the weight of the car from sliding) and that has to be overcome in order for the pawl to disengage and the tranny to shift into reverse.

Yeah, thats a common occurence.
When you stop, pull up your parking brake, then shift into park. That should help sometimes.

I actually always do that and then sometimes when I go to put the car in drive afterwards it gives me a hard time. feels kind of tight and then makes that clunking noise
