i had a 2001 jetta gls 1.8t automatic 4speed with a no cat, turboback, cold air intake, and a diverter valve, running 8-10psi (car has 150hp stock , the 02 and up has 180hp)..anyways i would race my friend next door with a 98 gt manual whom i race now in my 2006 4.0 with just a s&b cold air....ok we would go from 20 and 40 rolls up to 100, put 2 cars on him everytime, i would drive my car tiptronic....won everytime...now the 1.8ts are good engines, the car was light then mustang and my first gear launched like an STi, it was very fast first gear, automatically put a car on him in first from a dig...my 4.0 beats his gt with his cold air, xpipe and new gears, we go from digs i beat him about a car, car and half, sometimes half a car, never beat me yet...so my mustang beats his gt and my jetta beat his gt, so i think our cars can beat 01 and up jetta and gti's,....my friend has an 03 jetta 180hp , manual , he would beat my jetta from 60 up , put like 3 cars on him, i am going to race his jetta in my mustang once he comes down from gainesville,...i raced a jetta already , a stock 180hp one in my stang and beat him pretty bad...find a young kid driving one and race him !

You didn't state what year GTI, but look here -

any of them, but the new one we can take stick vs stick pretty easily. auto vs stick it is a close one, and anything vs their auto it is like racing a grocery cart. the new one tho....watch out.

Sorry guys for the lack of info! It looked like
a newer one.....and I don't think there are any mods done.
I just got a look from a distance at my towns weekly car meet,
and someone told me that I should race it; which of course
made me wonder how I would actually do.
