ORIGINAL: Surf Bum

It seems pretty much unanimous that the GT takeoff sounds great but what about horsepower improvement. Are there any gains? Most of the aftermarket mufflers are good for around 10HP,doesthe single GT mufflerget that much improvement?
On a Mustang dyno, my 4.0L/auto vert with a single GT muffler dyno'd at 180rwhp. I was told that they had dyno'da bone stock 4.0L/auto at 172rwhp. That's about 8rwhp (+/- for vairable conditions). Others (like scrming) reported a 7rwhp gain with a single GT take-off muffler over stock.

I recently added dual GT take-off mufflers with x-pipe and GT mid-pipe to my 4.0L/5spd coupe. I have a baseline 1/4 mile ET/speed with a single GT take-off muffler, and will soon compare it to the new set-up on the same track. I'm afraid I may have hurt my ET's and speed by adding the duals! I will report back after hitting the track again...

I found them on ebay, happened to be with someone local and I traded my 20,000 mile 16" wheels and tires which were just taking up space. When I was looking I did not see just one for sale, but you can pick up 2 for under $100.
There is a web site http://www.newtakeoff.com

You can find them at the bottom of the page for $74.99. You can also post in the 4.6L forum that you are looking for some. I'm sure you'll get a reply, and possibly get them for 50 or 60 bucks (plus delivery).

Thanks for the links! I don't know why, but today I'm getting a lot more hits when I google that. I also found that Saleen is selling them outright.

Unless a person is going for the absolute best performance or a specific sound, the GT takeoffs seem like the way to go.

Straight pipes sound nice if that is waht your looking for, but for us over 40 crowd the GT takeoffs sound just right, deep enought when you get in the pedal and not that loud at idle.

Running a straight pipe on this car isn't that bad. It has anice low idle rumble and when you step on it it's like "WHOOOMMMMPPPP". Or maybe it's like "VRRRREEEEOOOOMMM"

A single GT take off muffler is worth 10-12RWHP, we have tested this on the dyno with two stock 06 4.0s. On these cars duals are not worth anything until you have a power adder and make additional improvements to the exhaust (headers or remove cats).

Thanks for the info, as I said earlier there is a noticable difference in acceleration with CAI and GT muffler, I am impressed that you get that much from the muffler.

Having someone say that who has benchmarked this ROCKS. Thank you very much for the input!
