Default Someone broke into my car

I'm so upset. This evening around 9:30 after we closed up the store I was counting the earnings from the day with a co-worker (I'm a manager at a department store), and I heard some thumping sounds coming from outside. I had a weird gut feeling that I cannot explain, a feeling that something wasn't quite right with my car. I mentioned that I felt like I was hearing something and she said she thought so too but whenever we'd look toward the door we coulndn't see anything. I had let the second to the last associate go home at 9:20, at which point my car looked fine out in the parking lot down towards the end of the section of the lot, where I park so that no one will hit me. I had noticed at 8 that a van that was part of a nearby liquor store was parked two spaces down from my car, where in nine months I'd never seen it park. Then me and my co-worker left at 9:40. Her boyfriend came to pick her up, and as we locked up I noticed an old white Chevy Suburban sitting at an angle in which I couldn't see much of my car. It's headlights were aiming at my car from this angle. I told my co-worker to walk me to my car along with her boyfriend, so they did, and as I got there I noticed the door handle on the drivers side had been pulled out and the lock broken. The sheet metal below the handle had a crease in it which looked as if they'd stuck a flathead screw driver in there and pressed sharply upward. The area below the handle was also slightly dented inward as if they were banging on the door. I then saw the seat pushed all the way back and the glove box open with all my things that were in it laying on the passenger's seat. I then looked at the man in the white Suburban. He gave me this weird "bummer" type look and then drove off just after I saw what had happened. I got his license plates and then called the cops. They took nearly an hour to get there. During that time my co-woker waited with me and I realized my checkbook had been taken and I immediately closed my bank account. When a cop arrived Ireported what happened. My checkbook was the only thing stolen. My CDs and everything else were still there. The cop ran the plates and got a phone number and address and found them to belong to a '91 Chevy Suburban.

It might be unrelated, but the previous night someone had cut the phone wires behind the store. We didn't have phones at the store until 6pm. The cop I talked to about my car said that whoever did it was probably trying to disarm the alarm. I don't know if there's a connection between this and what happened with my car.

I have a good feeling that had my co-worker and her boyfriend not escorted me to my car, the man in it would have tried to steal my car or take my purse or worse. I know he wasn't just there to see me drive off. I could have been killed tonight. But I'd rather not think about that. I'm just grateful that I'm okay and that my car isn't in worse shape. It's certainly fixable. I hope the insurance will take care of it. And I know those subtle sounds I heard were probably the banging that occured when they were trying to get the lock open. The finger print cops came eventually but said if they did the inside of my car I would never be able to get the powder off, and he said the outside looked useless, too. The fingerprints had been smeared. I hope they find something out on who did this, and that I'm safe from any harm or rebuttals that these people might try. It's pretty darn scary. To all you Stang girls out there, be careful.

Certainly glad that you're ok. It could've been a lot worse. Glad you had your coworker and her b/f there to be there with you. At least your car wasn't to badly damaged.

This is one of those things that pisses me off. . The most important thing is that you're safe.
Always park your car in well-lighted areas esp. when you work late nights.

WTF was that guy in the white suburban doing there? Good thing your ok.

Get pepper spray! Or if tasers are legal, get one of those.

I remember you saying your 22 the other day. That also makes you old enough to get a concealed carry permit if yourstate allows it. Take **** from no one.

Wow, that sucks! Too bad you didn't have a gun or a big guy friend with a baseball bat to take care of that sack of ****!
I presume your car doesn't have the anti-theft option/alarm system?
Perhaps you should look into getting it installed.
Would have kept the damage to a minimum, your car wouldn't have been broken into and maybe even would have scared him offbefore he even started to try to break in.
Best of luck with the security measures I am sure you are considering.
Sounds like your store needs it not to mention your car.
More lighting and security camera's outside will go a long way in keepeing would be thieves at bay.
Might be time to hire a security guard? That is if your store can afford it.
Definately get the cops to make frequent pass by's and maybe even make friends with a few of them by offering them free munchies and drinks or something ;-).
