Default Wider Tires?

Should I get wider rear all season tires, b/c a lot of people say they have trouble hooking after getting 4.10's and a T-Lok? I was already having trouble with wheel hop before I am getting the gears and T-Lok installed. But I am also getting steeda rear upper and lower control arms, andsubframe connectors installed with them. So, My real question is will I be able to hook fine with stock sized aftermarketall seasontires if I have4.10 gears,T-Lok, and 245-260HP? Ialready have the tuner to fix the speedo and need to get 2 newtires within the next couple weeksso ur input would be greatly appreciated, especially form people with similar set-ups.

Thank You in advance,
Joe

Stock 16" rims or 17" rims..
I am running 255/65r16 Grabber UHP's out back on my stock 16" rims.
They are approximately 29" tall (2" over stock), and they DEFINITELY hook with just my 91 performance tune/intake/exhaust.
I would bake the stock tire from a dead stop. Now it just chirps and hooks.
A powertrax Lock-right locker is on it's way, so I'll have both wheels for some traction soon.
Still running stock 3.31 gears though.

With 4.10's I'd definitely recommend going up to a 29" tall tire, whether it's a 17" or 16" rim, either way.
Good luck.
And PLEASE, post up how you like the 4.10's. I'll be doing those next.
Thanks!

Default RE: Wider Tires?

I'm runnin the stock 16's, so the wider tires helped a lot with wheel hop? Thanx. I'm expecting at least 4 tenths in the quarter with 4.10's and a t-lok, that's the least gain that most people get with that combo on our cars. I've heard people gain7 or8 tenths easywith drag radials, so I wonder if wider tires will act almost like them. My guess is I'll gain 5 tenths with Steeda rear control arms and FL subframe connectors with them. So I wonder, Wider tireswill help with at least a couple tenths is my guess, maybe more. Anybody elsegot any info for me.

Thanx

that just defeats the purpous and causes more rotational mass which slows you down

if you have over 250 rwhp/ft.lbs i would think about a tru trac/eaton lsd/etc and not a tlok, there not consistant with how much power they take and can either last for a while with 350 rwft.lbs or bust as low as 210[8D]

T-loks are cheap, and have held up pretty well considering what people have been putting them through.
An 8.8 is obviously better as well, but that wasnt what he asked.

Obviously a larger tire will give you more rotational mass, but it is also giving you more traction and a bigger footprint.
It's a bit better traction than running 20" rims.

The stock 8.8 T-lok works fine in my GT.
Keep in mind a slightly taller/widertires has a bigger contact patch front to back as well as side to side. Stock tires are 215's, right?
Metric to inches: Ex - (215 X 65 X 2)/ (2550) + 16 = Daimeter in inches.
Width X Aspect Ratio X 2 all divided by 2550 then add the rim daimeter. That isthe tire daimeter in inches. The tuner should allow for correction of the speedo for different tires.

So wider tires u think will be worth a couple tenths ormorein the 1/4 then if I'd be pushin 240-260hp and 4.10's w/t-lok?
Thanx, btw everyone thinks mustang man's a true trac dealer b/c he always talks about em even though most gt owner'sin the past used t-lok's on theirGT's and were fine. I can see if your runningslicks or drag radialsand 260hp maybe you'll need a true trac or 8.8 rear end but I doubt u would need itfor street tires. Save the couple hundread dollars and just keep ur receipt, if ur t-lok fails within the firstfew monthsu can probably get it fixed for freeor a new one put in.

The stock 215/65r16's are 27" tall tires.
Going up to 255/65r16's will bump you up to 29" tall, but the tires will buldge off the rim a bit.
If you dont like that look, then you might want to stick with a 235 width or go with an 8" wide rim.

Post how it goes when you get everything installed.
Thanks.

BlkSunshine is the255/65/16 tire wider and taller than the stock size or just taller, if yes or no what's the widest dimension tire I can run on the stock 16 inch rims? Any suggestions? Any pics of wider tires on stock rims? Anyone with 4.10's and traction problems please give me some help.

Default RE: Wider Tires?

the first number will tell you how wide the tire is ((ex. 265/35/20) -thats what i have on mine). beacause i thought you said you were looking for wide - not tall. so the 265 mm divided by 25.5 will give you just over 10" of contact on the ground per tire. go check a tire shop for the widest you can fit on a stock rim. it all depends on how wide the stock rims are. but youre probably looking about a 275 or maybe a 285 at most. and that might be pushing it. it also depends on your wheel wells. you may be restricted by that also, but if you really want wider, im sure you could fix that with a hammer.
