Random Question about squealing brakes...
hey guys,
the brakes on my girlfriend's 2000 toyota camry are making a high-pitched squealing noise. theconfounding part isthat she just had her brakes fixed (she thinks they replaced the brake pads) three months ago and its already doing this again. anyone have any ideas on what the problem would be and how to find out if it is or not? any info. would be greatly appreciated!

RE: Random Question about squealing brakes...
I would say it is brake chatter. If you take out the pads and they are shiny on the backing plate they have been getting a high pith vibration between them and the caliper. Any parts store will have a solvent, almost like silcon, that you apply between the back of the pads and the calipers. This is a very very common problem

well in this scenario, is the squealing slightly audible? because it is really loud on her car. loud enough that it sort of scares her. if this is indeed the problem, how does one take out the pads to check? and where is the location of the "backing plate"? sorry, i admit that i don't know much about mechanical issues.

the backing plate is what the metallic part of the pad is attatched to. Due to your inexperience I would take this to a professional. The noise created by a high pitch vibration is very loud, hence "high pitch" lol. I guarantee this is the problem if you have just had new pads installed. A auto shop should be able to cure this problem in about 10 minutes so the charge should be minimal.

RE: Random Question about squealing brakes...
It sounds like brake squeal or chatter, which is caused by the back of the pads not being properly prepped before install. I always spray mine with "Disc Brake Quiet "before installing new pads. This is easily fixed, pull the front tires, remove the pads, spray the back of them with the brake quiet, let it dry (10 min) They will then have a protective red coating that eliminates brake chatter. A can of Brake Quiet which is made by CRC Industries costs about $8 and you can get it at any autozone, pepboys etc. Good luck.

thanks guys for the info. since i don't have the experience to attempt to remedy this problem myself, my suggestion to my gf was that she take it to a toyota dealership, not an independently owned mechanic/brake shop. is this good advice?
