Help! Installed GT Muffler - burned bumper
I just installed my takeoff GT Muffler. It was easy to do and looks good. I took it for about a 20-minute test drive and noticed the exhaust tip had melted the bumper...not too bad and I trimmed it out ( can hardly tell now). GT tip is bigger diameter than V6 tip.
My question: How much clearancedo I need between the top of the muffler tip and the bottom of the bumper to keep it from burning the bumper anymore. When I installed it I had about 1/4-3/8 inch gap between them.
Should I trim the bumper an little more or shorten the muffler tip. It extends about 2-1/2 inches beyond the bumper...looks like most I see on this site.
Muffler sounds great and seems to improve the way car shifts...noticably smoother.
Adding VMP CAI and Tuner next!
Any help is appreciated!

RE: Help! Installed GT Muffler - burned bumper
I'll check mine tonight - I drove it all weekend though and didn't see anything. This morning was a 60 mile drive on the highway so I'll check it when I get back to the car - but I think that I had about the same clearance on both sides.
I doubt that trimming the tip closer to the bumper would help you at all - it isn't the end that would cause melting, it is the tip being too close that causes that. Trimming the tip shorter would just place the end closer to the bumper but the tip would still be too close to the bumper if that is your problem

RE: Help! Installed GT Muffler - burned bumper
I have GT takeoffs on mine and the clearance from the tip to the bumper is only 1/4in at the most. No issues with melting. Make sure they don't shift closer than that. Had an issue when I first installed them, the right side was touching the bumper but that only took the paint off a little 1/2in square under thge bumper. Fixed them with a bit of persuasion from a prybar on the hangars.

Thanks everyone, I took it off to check aligment, noticed the hanger nearest the bumper was bent down...probably in shipping. That pulled it up closer to the bumper. Gently straightened out with pipe wrench and re-installed...have about 1/2 inch now an no more melt.
Moral of the story...if shipped, check the hangers to be sure they are not bent!

RE: Help! Installed GT Muffler - burned bumper
I have the MRT AeroTurbine, and while it hasn't really burned the cutout, it was very close to touching it. About a week after I had it installed it was like literally millimeters from touching the top of the cutout. It doesn't sit perfectly centered, but they pulled on the top hanger and got it to stretch. It's now about a fourth of an inch from the cutout and hasn't moved since.
