For those with a manual

RE: For those with a manual
I have driven manuals for the most part all my life. I have to say the smoothest shifting car I had was my first car.
1974 VW Beetle. 4 spd. The other manual transmission cars that I have driven 1988 Ford F150 4.9l straight six 5 spd, 1999 Ford Escort ZX2 5 spd, 2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt 4.6 v8 5 spd.

ive been meaning to ask this question for a little while.when i floor it from a stop, i go 1st to 2nd and then i hit the speed limit and try to go into 5th, but when i try to go into 5th, it sounds like my gears are grinding like no other. anyone know what this is?
thanks

RE: For those with a manual
here are a few things that I did to improve shifting:
1. Change fuel filter every 15k miles, makes it easier to start in first gear from dead stop.
2. Replace Tran fluid with Royal Purple ATF, made shifting easier and also quieted the transmission some.
3. Bleed the clutch, not sure if this is a correct title, but it helped me a lot. Here is the process:
a. Stop on a steep hill facing up the hill.
b. put the tran in Neutral (car still running, foot on the brake)
c. push clutch down slowly (should take about 5 seconds.)
d. let clutch out slowly (should take about 5 sec.)
e. you are done.
4. a little trick I do for getting into 1st gear is push in the clutch, pull stick back to 2nd (but dont go into the gear) then push forward into first gear. Goes like butter for me and after a while you do it without even thinking about it.
