Auto Overdrive question

RE: Auto Overdrive question
It just downshifts into 4th. Stepping on the pedal will do the same thing... or even better.. shift into 3rd depending how fast you are going. If you are going over 65.. I would keep OD on as eventually you will pass the powerband in 4th and will need the extra gear.

Sometimes when I want to pass someone, I turn off OD. It gives a little boost.

I have 4:10 Gears, and with OD-ON I am at 2,800 RPM at 70MPH, with it OFF I am at 3,600 RPM at 70MPH... I wouldn't suggest running the car for a long period of time over 4,000 RPM... While the engine should be able to take 3,500 to 3,800 for long periods of time, the tipping point is around the 4K mark I believe...
I turn it off and on (Overdrive) as needed, but I wouldn't suggest flipping it off at over 65MPH... even though "its supposedly not going to hurt it"... it can't be good on the tranny to downshift at those speeds...

Is O/D not just locking up the torque converter or is there actually a
5th gear set in the tranny?
My Challenger with an automatic has 1, 2, 3, D, OD.
I leave it in 3rd for most city driving.
D and OD are for speeds over 65 or so.
