Default Auto Overdrive question

I searched but I could not find.

Since I bought my 05 6er used from a dealer (not a Ford dealership) there was no manual for some odd reason. Anyway, is it safe to switch from overdrive to turning it off while the car is in motion?

A side note, I met my first cops today, exactly 2 weeks into ownership. However, the reason is a little rediculous. I was picking up my sister from school, reving the engine for all the little kiddies as I was entering the parking lot. Aparently there were two ladies who I "scared" with my powerfully loud bone stock engine/ehaust combo, and they found a cop somewhere (?!) to tell me that I was driving a little recklessly.

https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/results.asp

'05 owners manual courtesy of Ford fleet services - easy to download PDF file, free and no viruses.

but yes it's safe to switch in and out of overdrive while in motion

edit : just tested the link it will take you to a point where all you need to do is select the year, make & model from the drop down boxes

I doubt the ladies called the cops for the stock engine, i think they most probably called for the fact that you were showing off your vehicular goods to little kids.

yes it is safe to take off overdrive while driving.

Damn the more I think about it, that whole scene is just wrong.

Here's a ?, When racing r u faster in 4th and/or 5th gear w/overdrive off? I would guess so, but want tosee. That sucks on the cops thing, it's ok though b/c they have no proof. Next time just think about revving that thing w/duals and headers around midnight near them.

When you push the button for overdrive it allows your auto to go into 5th gear which is overdrive because the gear ratio is less than 1:1, for example it may be something like .75:1(not sure bout the ratio but thats just an example) so everytime axle rotates 1 time tranny rotates less than 1 time. This is why overdrive saves fuelmileage. 4th gear is direct drive 1:1 ratio which means everytime your rear axle rotates 1 revolution the tranny rotates 1 revolution.
