everyone will use the stock airsensor, it is the housing size that will change. The k&n, airraid, S&B, ones like that dont have a bigger one, and therefore dont require a tune (although it is much better with one) and ones like the C&L, JLT, deMolet and the mac/steeda all have bigger housings and therefore require a tune
you are therefore correct.

okay, thanks a ton, i was just looking through a 5.0 Mustang & superfords article and it seemed like they were saying that they changed the tube and the type of filter, but they kept the same sensor/sensor housing. but thanks for clearing that up. makes my research/decision a whole lot easier.
