Torque Converters

I have heard recently about torque converters being made for our cars. What exactly do they do to make auto's quicker? What's a good stall speed to get? And how much would install run for these things? Thanks for any info ahead of time!

Try this:

Stock our TQ converters are around 2k if I remember correctly, which means it wont lock and engage until then. In racing applicaitons, this is especially helpful when you are at the line, building rpms. If you launch at a higher rpm, you get into the powerband of the motor and/or fi sooner.

So a converter at 3k, means you can stall up the trans at the line to 3k before it engages and starts to inch forward. This can be very helpful if you are a centri or turbo and need to build boost at the line. For a street car, I would keep it anywhere from 2800 to 3200 with 3400 being the max for a daily driver. My old converter was restalled at 500rpm over stock, so on street tires I was able to power brake it up to 2500 and it still had very good street manners. On DR's I was able to hold it till 3k rpm pumping the brakes.

PH has reworked stalls available, which is what I had for the 4.0 5r55. Supernatural performance now has a wider range available, up to 3200 I believe. I know someone that bought one, we may see results of his upgrade this weekend if the weather conditions are favorable and he hits the track.

RE: Torque Converters

Good site and information! So this is pretty much only good for off the line/launching power. I would only have use for this at the track then, so this seems like a useless mod for me.
