i wouldn't mind keeping it. just change to a high quality S&B powerstack filter and you should be just fine. thats what i did to my AEM and it was an almost night & day difference using the bama tunes. to be honest, the upgraded aem wasn't much diff to the c&l. still love my c&l though.

Personally, this goes for anyone, if you aren't sure about a part your looking to buy... Ask here first!! I wouldn't put that on my car, poor "S" design. Chances are thats some cheap metal that will quickly heat up and no benefits will be seen. It will prolly start to flake also and you'll learn your lesson and buy a quality known name CAI that works. Your car wasn't a cheap investment so don't go cheap on modifying it.

you are completely correct on your reasoning and i feel and follow the same concept. however, with a part like this which is a DIRECT knock off to the AEM, its one of very few that you can just upgrade the filter and be done with it (except for adding a custom tune). that "S" design mimicks the curves of the rubber stock tube and seems to help prevent the car from leaning out. not 100% on this but this is what i read when i purchased my AEM way back when before most of the intakes out there right now were even available for our 4.0's, including the c&l. i too would never recommend buying cheapy parts for your stang but i'll let this one pass.
