I've had the same faint rubber burning smell since i got my sportlines and hand tuner, i thought maybe it was from the wheel rubbing really slightly against the well or something like that, but a friend of mine said it just smelled like hot engine. i adjusted the temp at which the fan kicks in (on the hand tuner) a few days ago n so far so good (knock on wood)

I got the same burning smell. It comes and goes. As it turns out the smell from mine was from the transmission. The T5 gets very hot and in my case there was a little too much oil in the transmission so when it heated up some small amount of oil was blown out through the vent underneath the transmission and ran along the transmission then flung around underneath the car with some of it getting on the exhaust. I could see the oil underneath the car and along the bottom of the transmission leading from the vent to the end of the tail shaft.

After doing some snooping around, I think I found the source. It appeared to be a plastic bag that was melting/melted. I wasnt quite sure. For those that have had the plastic bag problem LOL what did it look like?
