ORIGINAL: my first mustang

Change the oil & filter often and use a quality synthetic oil(I use Mobile 1)and a Ford filter and you will have no sludge problem. This is cheap protection for your car.
mobile 1 actually isnt a full synthetic, a true full syn is either amsoil, redline, or RP

use motorcraft oil/filter and change it at the recomended intervals

and yes they are used in newer exploders and older ones but the older ones were OHV

My '03 Explorer has the 4.0. 45,000 miles and no problems (knock wood). There's no secret here - -as other posters have stated, use quality oil and filters (I have continued to useMotorcraft products in the Explorer, but there are plenty of other goodquality products available) and change themin accordance with manufacturers recommendations, and you should have a healthy engine for many years to come.
