lol the way everyone else does it only breaks it down into per tank. so if you do a lot of driving on the freeway for that tank, your numbers will be high while if you do a lot of city driving, your numbers will be low.

I wanted to know how many miles per MONTH i was averaging versus how much I spend, so that I get the entire picture rather than a 12 gallon window.

I drive a lot for work and wanted to figure out if my expense vs mileage rate was worth it, so getting a view of an entire month worked in my favor based on how often i'm paid.

Just because you take a larger window to calculate an average doesn't mean the average doesn't hold true. I just want someone to check my math, thats all. It's not a waste of a thread when you know what the reasoning is.

**edit**
P.S. I wouldn't be the first person to average around 30mpg. Before buying the car I did some searching and found reports of other V6's getting about that much with freeway driving. Mine's a Manual trans which also helps, I just didn't think I'd actually see those numbers was all.

again, dont bash if you cant figure out the math, i'm just looking for someone to show me the problem with my formula if that's the case, that's all!

Then why don't you average your mileage over 4 or 5 tanks????? Your numbers can not be accurate if you are estimating how much you spent per gallon and approx. how many miles you drove.

Let me show you an example..

You Drive 350 miles you then put 15.1 gallons in your tank = 23.17 mpg
You Drive 331 miles you then put 15.2 gallons in your tank = 21.77 mpg
You Drive 362 miles you then put 14.9 gallons in your tank = 24.30 mpg

Then total 1043 miles 45.2 gallons 23.07 mpg

You should keep a log book that you update at every fill up that shows you miles traveled, amount of gas put in it and price paid.

You just can't teach stupid?

I wouldnt say your mileage is impossible if you did all highway driving. When i was driving back home from lake tahoe I was getting this......but it was alot of downhill in neutral

I'm not estimating miles driven, i was estimating price of gas per gallon at $3.89.

As I mentioned above, i have not ever, even ONCE paid less than $3.50 per gallon. So if I estimate paying $3.50 per EVERY gallon i've bought in 5 weeks, at $504 total dollars, then that is 144 GALLONS of gas (which is an OVER estimate, meaning the ACTUAL MPG would be higher than this equation equals).

Using YOUR equation I traveled a total of 3,930 miles (actual, not estimate) with 144 (estimated at an UNDER avg price of $3.50 / gallon) means..

*** $504 spent over 3930 miles ***

@ avg $3.50 / gallon ----- 3930 miles 144 gallons 27.29 MPG
@ avg $3.89 / gallon ----- 3930 miles 130 gallons 30.23 MPG

If you take the Average of those 2 numbers, you come out around 28.76 MPG.

So using YOUR math, at a minimum, over 3,930 miles I've averaged 27 MPG while more realistically, using actual gas price averages rather than an under-estimate to prove you're just confused and angry for some reason? (you cant teach stupid? i just used your equation to prove my point) I'm making ABOUT 28-29 miles per gallon.

Stop being angry, I was asking for math help, not a lesson from someone short sighted and irritable. thanks for your formula, you ended up helping out, despite your intentions.

I drove almost 4,000 miles in aprox 5 weeks, of course it was highway. Thank you reaper for some actual intelligent, non insulting, input.

take the average over several tanks, thats the most accurate way.

Don’t listen to them Foreu2env. You calculate it any way you want to. It's your car and your money. NEVER CONFORM.
I like to figure my gas mileage by take my weight (420lbs) and figuring out the number of btu's required to move that much weight minus the cost of a Big Mac (a Whopper is an acceptable substitute). Of course I average it over 30 years.

83gtragtop's just jealous of your advanced math skills.

It's hard to make an accurate record the way you are doing it with gas prices fluctuating the way they are. Last week here gas was $3.21, now it's $3.37.
You can try keeping a log on your computer. Here's a link for a free program;

http://www.vertex42.com/ExcelTemplat...alculator.html

According to my in dash info, it says I average 25 mpg and that's mostly city driving.
