Default Gas mileage calculations, am i crazy or is my math wrong?

Ok, I dont have one of those nifty on board gas mileage calculator things so I did some real rough math tonight and it's got me mystified.

Here's what I did...

I spent $504 on gas between august 5th and today. In that time, I drove aprox 3,900 miles.
(504 / 3,900 = .129....)
At that rate, I'm getting 12.9 cents per mile worth of gas, rounded up to 13 cents/mile.

If gas has been selling at the avg. price of $3.89/gallon, then divide 3.89 by .13 and you get 29.92. So that means for every 3.89 cents of gas(1 gallon) I buy, I'm going 29.92 miles?

Is there ANY freaking way i'm SERIOUSLY averaging nearly 30 miles per gallon!?!?!

I am gonna keep track on a more than 5 week time basis to find out the truth, but seriously unless my brain has fallen asleep tonight, somehow i'm averaging nearly 30 miles per gallon.

why dont you do it like normal people? reset your odometer then fill up till it click off the first time, drive and empty the tank, refill.... then do how much gas you put in it to fill it back up the second time vs how many miles you got on that amount of gas...

youre averaging your miles and the price of gas.... over such a long time and with such big numbers, it would be easy to be off by 5 or so with your total

I would divide it by like 4.00 or 3.90 something a bit higher because gas is just starting to drop...............like thats gonna stay that way

I adjusted the avg price of gas to $4.00 and dropped my miles from 3900 to 3600, just to see what effect it would have on the bottom line and it still came up at a lil more than 27 miles/gallon.

I can honestly say that in the last 5 weeks (not months) I haven't paid more than $4.00/ gallon even once. so that's a VERY high avg estimate. And the mileage on my car (thats only 5 weeks old) is 4,200 (bought with 300 on it from an Ohio transfer to MIchigan) means that in fact, i have driven 3900 miles. So my numbers while large, are damn near spot on... and even when over estimating gas prices and under estimating miles travelled, 27+ still seems ridiculous to me.

Before the mustang I drove a focus and it was averaging 25 mpg... this is just silly.

This is a really stupid way to calculate gas mileage. You are not getting 30mpg. What a waste of a thread.
