Default 8.8" axle swap - Fluid type/quantity?

Hey guys...

I'm getting ready for an 8.8" rear axle swap on my V6. I have the flange already. My question is, the axle comes without the fluid, so what do I need to buy? How much of it, viscosity? Do I also need a new panhard rod? for the install on my 05 V6? Or will all the other rear suspension parts fit right over? Thanks guys?

Owner's manual calls for 75w140 and 4.25 pints in the 8.8". You also need a bottle of friction modifier, unless you go with a brand of lube that already has them in it, like Royal Purple.

Service manual says otherwise:
1.7 liters (3.15 pints) capacity (1.0-1.125in) below the bottom of the fill hole with the axle at ride height.

Additive friction modifier 118 mi (4 oz).

Dude, who are you getting the axle from? I just had an 8.8" axle installed in my 05 V6 - I got mine from newtakeoff.com & it came with the fluid in it, so I'm surprised to read that yours comes without the fluid? Strange?!!

No, you don't need a new panhard bar.. you have the flange; everything else fits.

That is odd that they conflict each other. Here is my source: http://bradbarnett.net/mustangs/time...nersManual.pdf

But I'd go with what the service manual says I suppose.

I was wondering if it came with the fluid and sealed as well, although I'll find out tomorrow. I assumed they do, although pics on speedconcepts show them empty and uncovered (not where I got mine). BTW IROK, did yours come with a silver or black cover?

From what I understand if you have the stock cover the OEM panhard bar is fine, if you add an aftermarket cover then you may need to relocate or replace the panhard bar.

I would use the Motorcraft factory recommended, buy it from Ford.....when putting in the Friction Modifier from Ford use 1 and half to 2 Bottles of 4 oz. ......If you read around about 8.8's making moaning groaning sort of sound when making a sharp turn......some say TSB for clutch paks..."BS"......just needs more friction modifier, some insight from a Ford diff tech......mine was groaning added a more modifier sound was gone......just from experience use more than one 4oz. bottle of modifier........I used 2.....

Anyway if a 8.8 came with fluid inside, I would change it anyway.......IMO.
