Default Transmission Fluid change

guys im going to change the automatic transmission fluid and to re fill you have to pump it back in, i was thinking cant i just measure how much came out then dump the same amount of new ATF into the pan then screw the pan back on, wouldn't that work?

No that won't work. You also have to get the transmission up to operating temperature to fill it.

And the proper method you should have the car running, in gear. Not a fun thing on your back with the car on jackstands.

i still dont understand why it wouldnt work. Whatever i drain i put back in, what difference does it make if i pump it back in or put it in the pan b4 screwing. I might be missing something here.

You won't be able to get the proper amount in the pan. You are making an assumption that the amount you drained is exactly what you need to put back. The reason you need the car running and the transmission at operating temperature is so that the fluid pump moves the fluid from the pan into the system.

but if i did know the correct amount, putting it directly into the pan then screwing it back on wont somehow damage anything right?
