Default Tire Pressure Monitoring System on 2008

Hi,

I have a 2008 Mustang Convertible.

Because I live in an area of the country where the weather can be, well, crappy in the winter I decided to get a set Michelin ice tires for my car. I went ahead and bought the tires and a set of takeoff rims. They are identical to the rims that came with my car (the 16 inch painted aluminum).

When I installed the new tires, I took the car for a ride. The place that sold me the tires and wheels had warned me that the TPMS might not like the new rims. The guy thought the TPMS system might have to be initialized to understand that new sensors were talking to it. Sure enough, he was right. About 15 miles down the road, the TPMS light came on with a fault, and it wasn't saying low tire pressure, it was saying TPMS fault.

That leads me to my questions:
1.) Does this sound accurate to anyone?
2.) Is this something I can do myself, or do I have to take it to the dealer to have them program in the new rims into the TPMS computer?
3.) Will I have to take the car to the dealer every spring and fall to get the TPMS computer reprogrammed?

Any thoughts?

Thanks. That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with.

Probably going to have to get myself one of those tools to retrain the computer, because I'll be dealing with this again April when I put the regular tires/wheels on.

Same sensors? You should not have had to train them... New sensors? You must.

Yes, these are new sensors. I took off the original wheels, tires and sensors and replaced them with a set of take-offs with my winter tires on them.

Different wheels, different sensors.

Thanks for the info folks. Looks like I'll have to get a tool to retrain the confused computer.

One additional question:

The thread that 07stang posted earlier had a link in it showing how to put the car into "learn mode". That link appeared to be for a 2007 Mustang GT.

My 'stang is a 2008 with the V6. Is the procedure the same? The instructions say:

1.) Turn the ignition off, press and release the brake pedal
2.) Cycle the ignition switch from off to run 3 times ending in the run position. Do not wait more than one minute between cycles.
3.) Press and release the brake pedal.
4.) Turn the ignition switch to the off position
5.) Repeat step 2.

Will that put my 2008 into Learn Mode?

Thanks again.
