Default GT take off Muffler on V6 problem

I put my GT muffler (take off) on my V6 last night.
Guy I bought it off of (Casco) warned me to put a rag in between
the bumber and the exhaust because the tip would melt the bumper.
Did this, had about 1/8 inch clearance, when I got to work this morning, I noticed it
touched and melted a tad.

What do I do to fix? Do I need to bend one of the mounts?
I was kind of afraid to do that last night and wasn't sure it would help.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ahh.. sorry about the melted bumper! Hope it wasn't too bad! I had at least a 1/4"-1/2" clearance without any heat problems. It was a bit close at first, but a slightly smaller pipe in the tail pipe and some muscle gave it enough clearance.

I only have a ten minute drive to work, so it only melted a tad. I doubt you can notice.
I will use some muscle on it tonight and see if I can bend it down. I was kind of scared
I would break the hangers off the muffler.

It sounds like it may not be seated properly. The way I mounted mine was to first slip the muffler over the exhaust pipe WITHOUT tightening the clamp. Then I bolted the brackets in place (I premounted the brackets to the muffler before installing the muffler). Then I made sure the muffler had the proper clearance at the valance, THEN I tightened the muffler clamp. I suggest you loosen the muffler clamp and try re-seating the pipe in the muffler. It should give you a nice 1/2" space all around the tailpipe. Even if I move the muffler around the tailpipe does not contact the valance.

Good luck!

Tres,

I did exactly that. I read everything on this forum about it that I could before I tried.
From reading, I did just what you said. I always miss something stupid. I'll go back and loosen
that clamp again like you suggest before trying to muscle it. Thanks for your reply.

This is exactly why I had the dealer do my dual exhaust for me. Sorry to hear about your issues. Hope everything works out for you.

After loosening every bolt and trying everything under the sun to try to get the pipe away from the bumper.
I decided F it, it's no good to me this way, time for extreme measures.

I put a piece of board that fit perfectly in the exhuast about 4 foot long, stood on the end of it using my weight (175lb).
Applied minor bounce, Bingo, I now have a 1/2 inch gap between muffler and bumper.

Yikes! That's a scary thought of wedging a board in there and jumping on it. I wouldn't have the courage to go for it (of course, I've got about 10 pounds on you) but I'm glad it worked out for you.

I think I'm going to go with the Ford Racing Team V6 exhaust personally. I'd love to get duals but there are too many decisions that way (which mufflers, true duals or just a Y pipe, etc.)

Thanks for sharing the results. Not a lot of people talking about their exhaust upgrades here in the V6 forum.

Minor bounce, don't jump. I wouldn't even recomend the minor bounce, I might have just got "lucky"
I was just frustrated.
